From Procrastination to Action: The Power of Public Commitment
Have you ever found yourself dreaming big but struggling to take the first step?
Have you ever found yourself dreaming big but struggling to take the first step? You're not alone. Procrastination is a common barrier that holds many of us back from achieving our dreams. But what if I told you there’s a simple yet powerful step you can take to break free from this cycle and turn your dreams into reality? In this blog post, I’ll share my journey of overcoming “procrastination” and reveal the key strategy that helped me transform my aspirations into accomplishments. Let's embark on this journey together and discover how making a public commitment can be the game-changer you've been waiting for.
Let me start with my own story.
—From childhood, I had a good habit of reading storybooks and I have a good skill of speaking. At the age of 18, I decided that I would launch my YouTube channel and narrate stories there. Could you imagine, at the age of 25 just a couple of months back, I started my YouTube channel on Travel. Triptales. It took me 7 years to finally overcome this.
—Not only this but for the last one and a half years I have been thinking about writing. But see, I have been in the cage of procrastination. But I have managed to come out of that and finally started my newsletter. MindTales.
It’s around 3 o’clock at midnight and I just understood the striking decision I have made in the last couple of months which has made the difference.
SAY it LOUD and PUBLIC
Yes, this was the difference in my case. Every time I decided to start I told to myself, ok, I am gonna start next week and it never happened. It happens to everybody and I am sure you also have such a desire and you are still waiting to start acting on them.
In February, I made a bold decision. I announced on my Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts that I was going to launch my YouTube channel on travel stories. Within 1 month, I launched it and uploaded my recent Rome trip as well. You can read my recent travel blog on the Colosseum in my last post.
This gave me an immediate responsibility that as I made a public announcement I had to start this otherwise it would be a shame in front of the world. I was then bound to do that.
Believe me, there are two steps for every new journey.
— Going from 0 to 1
— Going from 1 to N
Starting from 0 to 1 is hard but once you make your dream public you will feel the energy and pressure to start. Once you start, you are going to make it successful.
So, don’t be late just go and make a public announcement. I wish you the best of luck on your journey. For more subscribe to Mindtales and don’t forget to say a “hi”. I love talking to people.
Same story here. After I decided to start writing, it took me months to publish my first post, and then I stopped. It took me yet another year to start over on Substack. Now I'm on a 9-month strike.
I had a similar approach by asking my wife and a good friend to keep me accountable.
That’s the story of my writing journey. Beginning, stopping, coming back to stop again. I still haven’t find the right trigger to keep me in the loop. I tried the public announcement but the truth is nobody comes to say « hey ! I didn’t receive your newsletter today as planned ». Well a few close friends did. I explained why and they were understanding and compassionate. Willpower is a brain sport hard to master (for me). However congrats for starting and holding onto your promise.
